Vern L. Brasel passed peacefully at home on September 30, to reunite with his wife, Rose Marie, fifty-three days after she entered Eternal Life.
Vern was born in Sacramento, California, on June 16, 1929, to Verney and Iris (Laughlin) Brasel. During the Depression, upon the death of his father, when Vern was seven, he and his brother Thomas were placed in an orphanage until their mother could finish her education in teaching. They were then reunited, along with their younger brother Donald.
Vern was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on U.S.S. Bumper, U.S.S. Corsair, U.S.S. Barb, U.S.S. Baleo, U.S.S. T-1, U.S.S. Robert E. Lee, and U.S.S. Dogfish as Chief of the Boat. After his career in the Navy, Vern worked as an Electrical Planner for General Dynamics (Electric Boat) until his retirement.
Vern and Rose Marie were founding members of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Gales Ferry. They enjoyed their hard-earned retirement gardening, which they attributed to their long and healthy lives.
Vern is survived by sons Kenneth (Joanie) and Daniel (Susan), grandchildren Sean, Kylie (Timothy), James and Ryan, great-grandchildren, Cian, Benedict and David Shaffer and brother Don.
The family will always be grateful for Pastor Heidi’s spiritual comfort and dear family friend Favour, who allowed the passing of Rose Marie and Vern in their home to be safe and peaceful.
Please join us to celebrate their lives at St. Luke 1830, Rt 12, Gales Ferry on Saturday, October 25, from 11:00 to 2:00.
