Margaret Anna Serluca passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, in New London, CT. Margaret was born on November 15, 1926, in Kingston, New York the daughter of the late Henry and Martha (Korte) Zimmerman who had immigrated from Germany in 1923. Margaret spent her early years in Southampton, Long Island NY and moved to New London in 1942 graduating from Williams Memorial Institute in 1944.
Margaret worked for several years after high school as a secretary for Tracy Sheffield, owner of the Sheffield Tube Corporation until she started a family. She was very active in her daughters’ lives and served as a Brownie leader, driver to dance and music lessons, and as a positive supporter of all their endeavors. After her girls were in high school, she returned to work as an assistant in the Zoology Department at Connecticut College until her retirement in 1988.
Margaret was the wife of her high school sweetheart, Anthony “Tony” Serluca. They married in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in New London on June 17, 1950 and were married for 61 years. Tony predeceased her in 2011.
Besides her husband, dancing was one of Margaret’s great loves. Well into her 90’s she would start to jitterbug with daughter Janet when she heard the big band music of her youth. Margaret also took great pride in her home, enjoyed gardening, going to the beach and reading. She was also a very enthusiastic member of senior exercise groups in both New London and Waterford where she made many friends. Margaret was always an exceptional hostess for holidays, picnics and dinner parties for family and friends.
Besides her husband, Margaret was also predeceased by her sister Shirley Gibson and brother-in-law John Gibson, brother-in-law Fred Serluca, and brother-in-law Bill O’Donnell.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Carole Cone (Lee) and Janet Schermerhorn (Tom Nestor) of Waterford, grandchildren Dana Cone, Douglas Cone (Tori) of Waterford, Jessica McManus (Stephen) of Madison, great grandchildren Zoey, Ainsley, Brooks, Maximus and Ronin, sister-in-law Cami O’Donnell of Mystic, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Margaret will remain in our hearts forever.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025 at the Impellittteri/Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave, New London. Friends and relatives are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at St. Joseph Church, 149 Montauk Ave. New London, with burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
