Joseph SanJuan Jr. Obituary

Waterford - Joseph "Joe" A. SanJuan Jr. of Waterford, peacefully entered into eternal life March 25, 2025 in the arms of his loving wife Angela and surrounded by family and friends. Joe was born Oct. 31,1969, in New London, the youngest child of Joseph and Patricia (Vendetto) SanJuan Sr.

Along with his sisters, Barbara and Deana, Joe grew up in Waterford, and you could find his larger than life presence everywhere. If Joe was able to choose a brother, he would have chosen his best friend, confidant and cousin, Brian Bartelli. On Sept. 29,2001, Joe married the love of his life Angela (Westner) in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and spent the past 24 years in Waterford, raising their two amazing daughters, Jessica and Samantha.

Joe was many things to different people, and those who were fortunate enough to know him, knew that they had a friend for life. He was always quick with a sarcastic comment that was always said with love. Many of his friends were the recipients of the "you fly, I'll buy" request, and everyone knew his Dunkin' order. He was so generous with his time and giving with his spirit. You knew that if you called Joe, whatever the request, he would be there.

Joe was an active member of Waterford Fire Service from the age of 14 and volunteered for many years, eventually serving as deputy chief. He graduated from Waterford High School in 1987. His law enforcement career began with the State of Connecticut as a DEEP officer before transferring to the East Lyme Police Department where he served for 27 years retiring in 2019 at the rank of sergeant. Following his retirement, he worked closely with Angela as owners of the Recovery Room Restaurant in New London.

Although his successful career was a big part of his life, his family and friends always came first. He was a strong example of "work hard, play hard." Many will remember him with a hockey stick or a wooden bat for a pick up game or recreational league. Joe loved to golf and was a member of the Great Neck Country Club. He enjoyed trips to the casino and card games with friends and he was always up for a good time. You always knew you were in for a surprise when his birthday came around. Joe and his brother-in-law Kevin always had some of the best costumes. He will be watching over his loving wife Angela and his two wonderful daughters, whom he adored, Jessica Rose and Samantha Lynn.

Joe is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Karlson and Deana Nott and husband Joe, all of Waterford; as well as so many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and beloved brother-in-law Kevin Karlson; and his sweet, loving, furry companion, Lucy.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at the Impelllitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Avenue, New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, in St. Paul Church, 170 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford. Interment to follow in St. Mary Cemetery New London. Donations in his memory may be made to, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
