Donald Harlacher Obituary

Donald A. Harlacher

Waterford — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald A. Harlacher, known fondly as “Donny,” who left us Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at the age of 58. Donny’s passing was a devastating loss, but he departed this world doing what he loved most: living and working on the ocean.

Born April 10, 1966, Donny spent much of his childhood in the state of Illinois, graduating from Winnebago High School in 1984. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1984 to 1988 aboard the USS Vincennes CG-49, where he worked as a Quartermaster. During his service, his ship was dispatched to the Persian Gulf in 1988 in support of Operation Earnest Will during the Iran–Iraq War. After completing his service, Donny returned to his home state of Connecticut, where he would eventually make his mark. His love for the ocean only grew stronger, leading him to pursue a career in commercial fishing. Starting from the bottom, he worked his way up through hard work and determination, ultimately becoming the beloved “Captain Don.”

As Captain Don, he made a lasting impact on the fishing community, where his legacy as a skilled and dedicated fisherman is etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. To his family and friends, he was a symbol of passion, strength, and loyalty—a man who lived fully and gave love freely. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void, but the memories, experiences, and lessons he shared will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Donny is survived by his mother, JoAnn (JoJo) Harlacher; his father, Kerry Harlacher (Shirley); his siblings, Kerry Harlacher Jr. and TerriLynn Coppola (Ryan); his daughters, Madison Harlacher and Sydnie Harlacher; and his granddaughter, Raelynn Rose W. He is also remembered by numerous extended family members, friends, and colleagues, all of whom were touched by his kindness, spirit, and the joy he found in his work.

A celebration of Donny’s life will be held in April 2025. Details regarding this will be shared with loved ones soon.
