David Kimes Obituary

KIMES: David A. Kimes, 89 of Waterford was embraced by His Heavenly Father on Oct. 11, 2024, in the company of his loving family. He was born Jan. 20, 1935, in Norwich, the son of the late Aubrey and Madeline (Bradham) Kimes. He graduated from the Norwich Technical High School. A Korean war veteran, he honorably served in the US Army as a Helicopter Mechanical Technician. He married the former MaeLouise Rubino on Nov. 14, 1959, in New London. His loving wife survives him. David worked for the City of New London retiring as Mechanical Supervisor in 1984. A long-time member of Groton Heights Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon, Trustee and member of the Pastor Search Committee. He also served as an AWANA Youth Leader for many years. David also was a past member of the New London Lodge of Elk’s #360. He lived a long life of love and service to the Lord and his family. Many a night, he could be found running out to rescue a family member or dear friend with mechanical issues. A jack of all trades, there was nothing David couldn’t fix or do, whether it be his charcoal artistry, building model ships, cars and helicopters, even building an addition on his home. He was competitive in nature, as displayed in family Uno games. Never without a joke, dinner table shenanigans or quick wit, he was loved by all who knew him. Throughout all of life’s experiences, he always maintained a positive attitude. Besides his wife MaeLouise of nearly 65 years of marriage, he is survived by two children, Robert Kimes of Waterford, Tonilynn (Randy) Wood of Quaker Hill and six grandchildren: Crystal (Red) Voss, Elizabeth Makepeace, Andrew Makepeace, Charles Vaccarella, Christopher Makepeace and Hunter (Alyson) Wood. He was predeceased by his daughter Roberta Makepeace and a brother Leonard Kimes. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 2 pm at Groton Heights Baptist Church, 72 Broad St., Groton, CT. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Groton Heights Baptist Church or MALTA Inc. The Impellitteri-Malia funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London has been entrusted with his care.
